Potential Side Effects of Teeth Whitening Treatment

November 11, 2014 by sugarfix

Have you noticed that your teeth have begun to look dull, gray, or yellow? If you are like most of our patients at Sugar Fix Dental, the answer is probably “yes.” Tooth discoloration and stains are virtually impossible to avoid. Fortunately, these problems can be easily corrected in order to restore bright, white smiles for our patients. Professional teeth whitening is a non-invasive cosmetic treatment that produces dramatic whitening results in as little as a single visit to our dental office. Another bonus is that teeth whitening benefits our Chicago patients while resulting in teeth whitening side effects that extremely minimal and, in many cases, non-existent.

Side Effects of Professional Teeth Whitening

Almost any patient can benefit from a brighter smile, and because teeth whitening is one of the more affordable cosmetic dental treatments, it is an excellent option for most of our patients. However, some are hesitant to undergo teeth whitening treatment because they wonder about the potential side effects. Many patients question whether teeth whitening will damage the teeth or make them more vulnerable to injury or decay. We are happy to inform our patients that teeth whitening treatment does not alter the surface of the teeth or cause any damage or weakness. Not only that, but most patients report zero side effects following professional teeth whitening treatment. At Sugar Fix Dental, we use superior teeth whitening products that significantly whiten the teeth while helping to prevent any uncomfortable side effects of treatment. The few patients who do experience side effects of teeth whitening report a minimal increase in tooth sensitivity. This is a temporary condition that often resolves itself within just a day or two after treatment. If sensitivity causes discomfort, patients should avoid foods and beverages of extreme temperatures and may want to consider switching to a toothpaste specially formulated for sensitive teeth.

Over-the-Counter Teeth Whitening Side Effects

We recommend that patients who are looking to whiten the teeth consider one of our professional services. We offer both in-office and at-home treatment in order to best accommodate the unique needs of each of our patients. However, we do understand that some patients will opt for over-the-counter teeth whitening products. Patients should be aware that the potential for side effects with over-the-counter whitening products is greater than that of professional teeth whitening. This is due to the simple fact that over-the-counter products are more likely to be used incorrectly. If the product is applied wrong or left on for too long, patients may suffer from uncomfortable side effects. Potential complications from the misuse of over-the-counter teeth whitening products include the following:

  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Irritation or inflammation of the gums and other soft tissues of the mouth
  • Enamel erosion
