Hey, what’s your favorite thing to eat for breakfast? It might seem like a strange thing for a dentist to ask unless your breakfast consists of candy and soda. We’re going to guess that you don’t start your day that way, which is a good thing, right?
When you choose what to put on your plate in the morning, you’re probably choosing foods that are healthy and filling. That’s a great start, but we also want to make sure we’re thinking about our oral health, too! In this blog post, we’re going to share three easy breakfast options for a healthier smile!
#1 – The Light Breakfast
LOW-FAT YOGURT WITH SHAVED ALMONDS AND GRAPEFRUIT
If you’re looking for something that’s fast, healthy, and great for your smile, this option is a winner. Low-fat yogurt, especially Greek-style yogurt, has tons of protein, which will keep you full throughout the day. Yogurt is also full of calcium, which is awesome for teeth. Almonds have both calcium and phosphorus, so they’re a double-whammy if you want a healthier smile.
Finally, grapefruit (and other citrus fruits) are full of vitamin C, which is really great for gum health. Citrus is pretty acidic, though, so be careful and try to rinse your teeth afterward by swishing with some plain water. Contrary to popular belief, brushing won’t help. It will actually make the acids more harmful since you’re actually grinding them into your teeth with the toothbrush.
#2 – The Stick-To-Your-Bones Breakfast
EGG WHITE OMELETTE WITH SMOKED SALMON, CHEESE, AND SPINACH
If you have a little more time, this savory breakfast option is jam-packed with all kinds of delicious foods! Not only will you have a healthier smile after whipping up this omelet, but you’ll also have more energy due to all the healthy ingredients!
The phosphorus in the eggs, fish, and cheese will help keep your teeth strong. Not only that, but you’re also getting lots of calcium from the salmon, cheese, and spinach. Some people are surprised to learn that dark leafy greens (like spinach) are also really high in vitamin C. You really can’t lose with this awesome nutrient-packed dish!
#3 – Sunday Brunch
TEX MEX MIGAS WITH FRUIT SALAD AND GINGER GREEN TEA
If you have a little more time, this recipe for Tex Mex Migas is a winner in my book! Not only does it have eggs — which as we discussed above are so, so, so good for your teeth — it has beans, which are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants lower inflammation, which means healthy gums! This recipe also calls for sweet potatoes, which are a great source of vitamin A.
Create a quick fruit salad with apples, kiwi, strawberries, and pears, and you have a side dish that practically guarantees a healthier smile. Finally, a tall glass of refreshing iced green tea is the perfect way to start your day. Make a big pitcher of unsweetened green tea and steep some fresh ginger in it. It’s been shown that ginger can naturally inhibit bacteria growth in the mouth!
So, what do you think? Which breakfast option is your favorite? Do you think you can start incorporating these ingredients and dishes into your regular breakfast routine?
