It is estimated that nearly 10% of adults are considered to experience some kind of dental phobia. Dr. Jessica Emery and the team at Sugar Fix Dental Loft are sensitive to that statistic, and go above and beyond to ensure each guest has a pleasant experience.
Knowing all dental anxieties are different, we first meet with new patients outside of the treatment room in our consultation suite. Our practice manager, Amy, explains the initial visit and has a brief conversation about their dental history. She will also address any general questions or concerns. This time gives patients the opportunity to settle in and get to know us, prior to actually entering the treatment room and meeting Dr. Emery.
We've found our practice of initially meeting clients outside the treatment room to be beneficial for a multitude of reasons. It's less intimidating to discuss dental history and potential anxieties when you're not already sitting in the dental chair. In turn, we're better prepared to treat you and communicate in the most compassionate way. Dental anxiety comes wrapped in several different packages, so it's helpful to know what is most concerning to our clients. I've listed 7 of the most common fears below.
COMMON DENTAL PHOBIAS
- Fear of the unknown
- Fear of the dental equipment
- Sensitive gag reflex
- The dentist seems ominous
- Fear of loud noises
- Fear of lying back in a dentist's chair (relinquishing control)
- Unable to breathe through the nose
Helping patients manage and overcome these fears is important to us. For this reason, Dr. Emery and the team at Sugar Fix Dental loft are certified in conscious oral sedation. Conscious oral sedation is a non-intravenous sedation option where Dr. Emery administers a sedative "cocktail" that will relax you during the procedure, but won't render you totally unconscious. Many patients will fall asleep during the procedure, and report feeling as if it only lasted a couple of minutes. When treatment is complete, you will be very relaxed and have little to no recollection of the visit.
BENEFITS OF SEDATION DENTISTRY
Sedation dentistry has many benefits, which include:
- Comfortable dental visit
- Safe and effective – FDA-approved
- Little or no recollection of treatment – feels like sleeping
- No anxiety or stress during treatment
- Allows the dentist to tend to dental issues before they worsen
- Patients can sit still for period of time while they attain a healthy, beautiful smile
